The South American head of state is in the midst of a storm over his interpretation of the fight against drug trafficking. "That drug is illegal because it is produced in Latin America"

Cocaine is no more harmful than whiskey." This is what the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro , said . His words have sparked an intense debate in the country about his interpretation of the fight against drug trafficking . "Cocaine is illegal because it is produced in Latin America, not because it is worse than whiskey," explained the progressive leader. For Petro, in fact, the illegality of cocaine is due to geopolitical factors and not necessarily to its level of harmfulness compared to other legal substances.

"Legalizing cocaine is an effective solution against crime"

And in fact, according to the South American leader, there are substances like fentanyl , which have a devastating impact in the United States, but which are not subject to the same level of restrictions. The head of state of Colombia also suggested that the legalization of cocaine worldwide could represent an effective solution to dismantling the illicit business that supports criminal organizations.
