Germany, Merz (CDU) closes to the far right

In Germany , in the aftermath of the strong protests over the axis with the AfD on the migrant motion passed last week in the Bundestag, the Christian Democrats are closing in on the far right.

"We can assure you of one thing: we will not collaborate with the party that calls itself Alternative fuer Duetschland, not before or after. Never," assured the leader of the CDU and candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz , speaking from Berlin at the party congress. His words were greeted with a double ovation from the CDU delegates in the room.

Merz: Afd against everything we have built

"AfD is against everything that our party and our country has built," he continued. It is against the euro, against NATO, he listed, "and we will do everything to make it as small as possible. There will be no collaboration, no concessions and no minority government. Absolutely nothing." And he said he wanted to send AfD "to the margins, where it belongs." The stance comes after the CDU and AfD voted together for the anti-migrant motion, which was then rejected in Parliament.

The Berlin Protest and the Federal Elections

Right in the wake of the controversy related to the motion there was a large protest in Berlin in the procession that contested Afd and Cdu, and that involved 250 thousand people. And Merz declared: "We are very determined. In twenty days the federal elections of 2025 will be decided. We will win these elections with an excellent result".

"Let's not leave the country to the populists"

The CDU leader also stressed his intention not to leave the country to populists and explained: "We are fighting for a change in politics in Germany. That is why this Bundestag election is also an election for the approval of our democratic order. We must show that this order is still capable of meeting the challenges that await us. Otherwise, Germany risks sliding towards left-wing or right-wing populism."

"Third Year of Recession"

"Germany is in its third consecutive year of recession," Merz told the CDU. "At no other time in post-war history and in no other industrial country in the world has this happened." He also accused the "traffic light" government of having pursued "a green economic policy" that leads to "deindustrialization." And he added: "Get the green NGO lobbyists out" of the Ministry of Economy.

Ukraine and the "Threat to Our Security"

The CDU candidate then spoke about the war in Ukraine and clarified: "The threat to our security no longer consists solely in the military threat of a war of aggression. For us too, the threat from Russia is very real. Ukraine is currently paying the bitterest price for its unilateral disarmament after 1994. We want to be able to defend ourselves so that we do not have to defend ourselves."
