They had been rescued over the weekend in international waters south of Lampedusa.

The Cassiopea patrol boat  of the Italian Navy, carrying the 49 migrants rescued over the weekend in international waters south of Lampedusa, has arrived at the port of Shengjin, in Albania. The ship entered the port at 07:30. On board are Bangladeshis (the majority), Egyptians, Ivorians and Gambians , who will be subjected to the accelerated border procedures provided for those coming from safe countries and who have not handed over identity documents. Five migrants among the 49 will return to Italy, according to what PD deputy Rachele Scarpa reported. They are two people from Gambia, one from Bangladesh and two others from the Ivory Coast, while 8 from Egypt and 36 from Bangladesh will go to the centers in Gjader.

What happens now to migrants transferred to Albania Transfers to Albania have restarted after a two-month freeze , in the wake of the record number of landings recorded in January . The migrants all come from countries included in the "safe" list. In the "Italian" hotspot of Shengjin, asylum seekers will be identified and undergo in-depth medical screening. If conditions of vulnerability are found, they will be taken to Italy, as happened in some cases in the two previous transfers to Albania, in October and November 2024.

The subsequent transfer to Gjader

The foreigners will then be transferred to the other center under our jurisdiction, in Gjader, about twenty kilometers away inland, on the basis of the detention ordered by the police commissioner of Rome. It is in the reception area of the site that the migrants should spend the night and the next few weeks, awaiting the outcome of their asylum application. Those whose application is rejected will be transferred to the CPR, inside the camp, where a small prison has also been set up, for those who commit crimes.

Waiting for the judges' decision

The judges of the Court of Appeal of the Capital will then have to decide, within 48 hours, whether or not to validate the detention of the other 44 migrants. Therefore, the response should be by Thursday. On other occasions, the magistrates have suspended the validation for all the migrants detained, referring to the decision of the European Court of Justice on safe countries, expected on February 25, and the foreigners were therefore taken to Italy.
