The 27-year-old was arrested for 48 hours and then released to return to Italy. The girl's father: "She was beaten in the face, her hair was pulled and torn; he bit her and punched her in the chest." Local police are investigating for domestic violence.

"I didn't jump, I was running away from my boyfriend's attack and the only way out was to jump off the balcony". These are the words Claudia Chessa , the 18-year-old from Arzachena who fell from the balcony of a hotel in Valletta where she was on a study holiday with her boyfriend Alessio Lupo and a friend, told her father Silvano. The Maltese police are suspecting the crime of domestic violence .

The boyfriend , 27 years old, was questioned by the police and heard in court, where he was fined for drug abuse. The man was however allowed to return to Italy to Arzachena , the Sardinian town where the girl also lives.

The Italian embassy, contacted by the girl's father, is following the story. The man allegedly had an argument with the girl before Claudia's fall from the fourth floor (cushioned by the awning of a commercial establishment below), but he was among the first to rush to the aid of the 18-year-old lying on the pavement.

" My daughter is not crazy , she didn't jump off the balcony because of a simple argument, she was beaten and tried to run away to save herself", said Silvano Chessa, Claudia's father. "I was notified of what had happened last Thursday morning and I managed to reach my daughter on Friday morning on the first available flight from Cagliari - the man explained - Then, however, I had to return to Sardinia because of a bereavement that struck us".

"Claudia is conscious at this moment and has already been interviewed by the Maltese police. She told us that there are video surveillance cameras right in front of the window from which she threw herself to escape from the boy. She was running away from him , she screamed and asked for help. She was beaten and has the marks all over her body - her father said -. She was hit in the face, her hair was pulled and torn out and in fact she is missing it now, he bit her and punched her in the chest".

Alessio Lupo, a 27-year-old from Arzachena with whom Claudia has been in a relationship for about three years, had joined her in Malta four days ago and was in the hotel in the center where she had temporarily moved to spend those days. "Last Wednesday evening - added the parent - Claudia told us that they went out and went to a club about fifty meters from the hotel. Here she said she had had an argument with her boyfriend , who had taken drugs, and that she had insisted on going back to the hotel".

"She didn't like the environment: he didn't take her decision well and started insulting her and hitting her, until once they got to the room he let loose. A couple of days before, she had called her mother to tell her that there had been an argument between them and he had slapped her, immediately apologizing. We were worried". As soon as he arrives in Malta, Silvano Chessa will speak to the local investigators who have already interviewed his daughter in the hours following her hospitalization. Alessio Lupo, also questioned by the Maltese investigators, was arrested for 48 hours and then released with the prohibition of approaching Claudia for three years.
