Trump insists he wants to acquire autonomous Danish territory to ensure its security

The Danish government has announced that it will spend 14.6 billion kroner, or two billion euros, to strengthen security in the Arctic - a strategic area due to its proximity to Russia and the United States - and the North Atlantic, while Donald Trump insists that he wants to acquire Greenland to ensure its security. "The threat level in the Arctic and the North Atlantic has increased. We must therefore significantly strengthen the defense presence in these regions," said Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen in a statement.

The minister said the program, shared with Denmark's main political parties, was developed in "close cooperation" with Greenland and the Faroe Islands , two autonomous Danish territories. "The acquisition of new Arctic vessels is a key priority. They are very important for the safety of Greenlanders," Vivian Motzfeldt, the Greenland government's foreign affairs officer, said at a press conference with the Danish minister.

Denmark had also signed an agreement on the Arctic in 2021 , but the press revealed that several aspects had not materialized. An amount of 1.5 billion Danish kroner had been promised, in particular for long-range drones and radar stations. In this regard, Minister Troels acknowledged that "governments have not done enough" for Arctic defense. And he stated that a new agreement on "deterrence and defense" in the region will be reached later in 2025.
