The incredible story of English couple Donovan and Kirsty: he texts her "hi" casually and she texts him back, they fall in love and get married. The couple: "That moment led to more than 20 years of love"
He sends a text message to a random phone number and meets his future wife. It is not a movie, but it is the true story of a man in the United Kingdom, Donovan Shears . As reported by the BBC , in 1998 the man sent a text message to a random phone number. That gesture changed the course of his life.
Donovan had gotten his first phone for his 18th birthday and had just discovered how to send text messages. He punched a number into the keypad. He sent a simple text message to that number that said hello . Another text message went out from that number with the same text. That hello was from Kirsty, Donovan's future wife. "That moment led to more than 20 years of love, laughter and togetherness," the couple now say.
That evening Donovan sent several messages from the pub in Coventry where he worked, but Kirsty was the only one to reply. Four years later the couple married in her home country of Scotland and Donovan and Kirsty now have two children, aged six and nine.
She said she replied to Donovan's text thinking it was someone she knew whose number she had not saved. Speaking to the BBC , the couple recalled meeting at Coventry station for the first time, then going on a date at a popular nightclub in the city. Donovan explained: "That night I started sending random texts, bragging to my friends. I picked the first four digits to match mine, then the last three at random, and it probably came up with four or five different numbers, and then I didn't pay any attention."
"We were texting each other during the day and then obviously they became more and more frequent and then we decided to call each other." "We were texting so much that my phone bill was over £250 a month. I think that's when I decided we had to call each other," Donovan continued. “We started to have feelings for each other, another thing that attracted me to her: she has a beautiful Scottish accent,” he adds.
The couple met six months after Donovan's first message. "I told my stepsister I was going to meet him and she said it could be who knows who and I said I knew. I was 18 and I didn't think about the consequences. I got on a train and came to Coventry," Kirsty says.
Donovan admits he was scared to take the first step, while Kirsty felt much more confident. "The rest is history. She's an amazing woman, so intelligent and we know each other so well, she's my best friend, as well as my wife," Donovan says.
Twenty years on from their big day, the couple will renew their vows at Coventry Cathedral on Valentine's Day. Donovan says they are looking forward to celebrating the day with the whole family. "I took my son to try on the dress and he loved it, then my daughter said she wants to see her mum in a dress, she can't wait," he added.
