Washington's reaction: "It will bring 1,500 new jobs, welcome to the golden age
Stellantis announces investments in the United States , becoming the first automaker in the Donald Trump era to take the initiative. In a letter to American employees, the chief operating officer of North America, Antonio Filosa, outlined the company's next moves. Moves, he explains, that are part of "our commitment to invest in our U.S. operations to grow our automotive manufacturing and production here."
The White House: "Welcome to the Golden Age"
Washington's reaction to the news was immediate. "Under President Trump's leadership," reads a tweet from the White House, "Stellantis is bringing 1,500 jobs to Illinois, reopening Belvidere, and investing in Detroit, Ohio, and Indiana. America's manufacturing renaissance is here. Welcome to the Gilded Age."
Trump-Elkann meeting before the swearing-in
Filosa reported that the group's chairman John Elkann met with Trump last week, before the swearing-in. Elkann, who was in Maranello for Hamilton on the day of the new president's inauguration at the White House, "shared our enthusiasm for Trump's strong commitment to the American automotive industry and what this means for US employment and the economy in general," Filosa's letter reads. Elkann also assured Trump that Stellantis intends to "further" strengthen its manufacturing footprint in the United States and provide "stability to the large American workforce."
The twelve factories in the States
For Stellantis, therefore, Trump's 'pro-business' push is an opportunity to unlock billions of dollars in investments that were blocked during the Biden era and open a new era of relations with unions and the new administration. The carmaker has about 66,000 employees in the States and has 12 assembly plants, six for engines, three for transmissions and seven for mechanical processing. Among the investments that Stellantis will make in the US is the one for the production of a medium-sized pick-up in Belvidere, Illinois, but also the production of the next generation of the Dodge Durango at the Detroit Assembly Complex.
The development plans
"We will invest in Toledo," Ohio, Filosa added, explaining that Stellantis will push for "additional technologies and strong product actions for the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator at the Toledo Assembly Complex, and more critical components for our production at our Toledo Machining Plant." The automaker also plans "to make additional investments in our Kokomo facilities," Indiana, "to produce the Hurricane 4 engine, ensuring that the United States will be the manufacturing location for this strategic engine." The investments were shared with the United Auto Workers, the powerful American metalworkers union, with which Stellantis intends to "work together to strengthen the company," Filosa assured.
