At least 66 people have died in a fire that broke out overnight at a hotel in the popular ski resort of Kartalkaya , Turkey , Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, updating the death toll and adding that 51 people were injured , one of them in intensive care.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the blaze, which firefighters managed to put out after about 10 hours. Four people have been arrested, including the owner of the hotel, according to the Habertuk broadcaster.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that "all necessary measures will be taken to shed light on all aspects of the incident and bring those responsible to justice," Anadolu reported.
The fire in the middle of the night
The fire broke out, for reasons yet to be clarified, at 3:27 a.m. local time (1:27 a.m. GMT) inside the Gran Kartal Hotel, a 12-story, wood-paneled hotel at the ski resort in the mountains of Bolu province in central Anatolia, about 150 kilometers northwest of the capital Ankara.
Local media reported that 237 people were staying in the building at the time of the fire, with some dying after jumping out of windows to escape the flames.
