The owner of X and Tesla, nominated to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), was speaking to Trump supporters from the stage at Capitol One Arena in Washington. The response: "My opponents need better dirty tricks"
The video of an alleged Roman salute by Elon Musk while speaking from the stage of the Capitol One Arena in Washington addressing Donald Trump supporters is making the rounds on the web and sparking controversy. In his speech, the owner of X and Tesla, nominated to lead the Department for Government Efficiency (Doge), thanked the new president's fans ("I just want to say thank you for making this possible," he told the crowd), then beat his chest and extended his right arm. Then, he turned to the audience behind him and repeated the gesture. The images, broadcast live, did not escape the attention of the American and international media and social media.
The video was also posted by Musk's representative in Italy, Andrea Stroppa , who accompanied the images with the words: "The Roman Empire is back, starting with the Roman salute". Stroppa himself, however, later deleted the post, replacing it with another: "That gesture, which some have mistaken for a Nazi salute, is simply Elon, who is autistic, while expressing his feelings by saying 'I want to give you my heart', and that is exactly what he communicated into the microphone". "Elon does not like extremists!", Stroppa then underlined.
Scholz: "Musk's support for the far right is unacceptable"
"In Germany we have freedom of expression. But Musk is a billionaire, what we do not accept is his support for the far right." This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the World Economic Forum in Davos in response to a press question about photos depicting Musk with an "outstretched arm" and Musk's initiatives in favor of the AfD. Musk - during a debate on the tariffs announced by Trump - said that "we will defend freedom of trade" and that the European Union for Germany "is of the greatest interest".
