At least 10 people have died and more that 180,000 forced to evacuate as wildfires rage across Los Angeles, with authorities expecting the death toll to increase. There are six active fires including the Palisades Fire, which has burned more than 20,000 acres and is “one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles,” the city’s fire chief said. The Eaton Fire has burned 13,956 acres. The Kenneth Fire, which ignited Thursday in the Calabasas and Hidden Hills areas, grew to 1,000 acres in mere hours. In total, the wildfires have burned through more than 35,000 acres and destroyed an estimated 10,000 buildings, officials say.
President Joe Biden said the federal government will cover all of the costs for the initial disaster response to the wildfires.
Here’s what to know about the six active fires in L.A. :
- Palisades Fire: The blaze has burned through more than 20,000 acres in and around Pacific Palisades and killed at least two people. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said the fire has destroyed more than 5,300 structures since Tuesday. The fire is eight percent contained.
- Eaton Fire: On the city’s east side, near Pasadena, the fire has killed at least five people and burned through 13,956 acres, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said at news conferences. More than 7,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed by this fire, which is 3 percent contained, officials said.
- Kenneth Fire: The fire in the Calabasas and Hidden Hills areas was first reported Thursday afternoon and spread to 1,000 acres. It is 35 percent contained. A person was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on suspicion of arson in connection with the fire, but there was not enough evidence to charge them with a crime, LAPD Chief Dominic Choi declared Friday.
- Lidia Fire: Firefighters have contained 75 percent of the fire after it emerged in Antelope Valley on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday evening, it had burned through 394 acres.
- Hurst Fire: In the north, near San Fernando, the fire covered 771 acres as of Thursday night.
- Archer Fire: The blaze broke out Friday morning in the Granada Hills area, northwest of downtown Los Angeles, amid what officials described as “erratic winds.” It has so far burned about 19 acres.
